CLARISSA WAS BUSY PREPARING for the Autumn’s Ball, helping Darcia and Julie with their wardrobe and playing with the children. Sapphire had decided not to attend the Ball, choosing rather to spend her time with Damien and the children exploring the Duke’s estate. That sounded so inviting that Clarissa wished she could join them, instead of making an appearance at Lady Autumn’s ball. The woman was too rigid in both posture and her way of thinking. She would not approve of the girls’ bluntness. Avoiding the lady would be almost impossible, unless they arrived late, which Clarissa planned on doing.

The Duke of Somerset had not been seen for the entire week. His only communications had been through a letter where he had given Clarissa permission to attend the ball. It was brief, too short that it piqued her thoughts. Would he be there? Would he ask her for a dance? Of course, he was busy with other duties, but could he not have visited them? She missed him already. And did he not mention that Darcia should be out of the public’s viewing? He was up to something. Whatever it was, it would not be a danger to them. Thomas would not risk their lives, and she promised they would not leave her sight.
